• Public Consultation
1st July 2020
Changes have been passed by the South Australian Parliament that will allow GM food crops to be grown in this state, which council is currently seeking feedback from the community on.

The Genetically Modified Crops Management Act 2004 provides for the designation of areas of the State in which no genetically modified (GM) food crops may be cultivated. Recent changes made to the Act have substantially altered the way areas may be designated for this purpose.

The District Council of Loxton Waikerie is considering whether to apply to the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development to designate the area as one where no GM food crops may be grown.

The Council is seeking the views of the community, including persons engaged in primary production activities and food processing or manufacturing activities, regarding whether such an application should be made.

Written submissions may be made:

  • By email at council@lwdc.sa.gov.au
  • By post to PO Box 409, Loxton 5333, or
  • At our offices located at,
    • 29 East Terrace, Loxton; or
    • Strangman Road, Waikerie

Public submissions will be accepted up until Wednesday 22 July 2020.

Submissions will be considered at an upcoming meeting of the Council and may also be forwarded to the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development for consideration.
