Septic Tank Desludging

As part of the operating and maintenance of Council's Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS), Council provides a septic tank desludging program. Properties within the townships of Loxton, Waikerie, Kingston-on-Murray and Moorook are connected to CWMS. To prevent sludge passing into Council drains, our contractors attend each property on a programmed basis to remove accumulated sludge from the tanks.

Council's desludging contractor will notify you when your tank is due to be emptied. You will need to completely expose the septic lid and ensure access to the property is available. If you are unsure of the location of your septic tank in most instances Council has plans that can be provided to you.

Council's fact sheet on locating and exposing septic tank lids can be viewed here.

After your septic tank has been desludged, council receives a service report. The report outlines the dimensions and condition of the septic tank including items that require your attention. For example, if a riser is required to be installed, tree roots affecting the tank and/or septic tank lid is broken/cracked.

Please note - if a replacement septic tank is required approval must first be obtained from Council. For minor maintenance/repairs please forward evidence the work has been undertaken to council@lwdc.sa.gov.au (e.g., a receipt from a plumber).

Council has prepared fact sheets for septic tank risers and tree roots invading your septic tank and drains to provide further help and clarification.

Refer to our CWMS fact sheet for further information on septic tank desludging and other effluent issues.
