Council Partners with Cornerstone Housing to Address Key Worker Housing Needs in Loxton

Published 12th December 2024
Council is pleased to announce a new housing development in partnership with community housing provider, Cornerstone Housing Ltd.

The partnership will see the development of 15 new dwellings dedicated to key worker housing at Lot 53 Tobruk Terrace, Loxton.

First presented as a proposal to Council in December 2023, the project aims to address the availability of affordable and accessible housing for essential service providers – crucial to the sustainability and growth of the Loxton Waikerie District. Having since achieved planning approval, preparation works are set to commence today, Thursday 12 December 2024, with the clearing of trees on site. Demolition of the former Senior Citizens building and construction of the dwellings are expected to commence in the first half of 2025.

Providing homes for healthcare professionals, educators, emergency services personnel, and other vital workers ensures that these essential staff can live in the communities they serve. This not only enhances their ability to respond effectively to local needs but also contributes to the overall wellbeing and resilience of the district.

Affordable housing is a critical component of the district’s broader strategy to support local industries, improve service delivery, and attract a diverse workforce to meet the demands of a growing population.

Comments attributable to David Beaton, Chief Executive Officer:

“The project represents a significant opportunity for economic growth in the region. The construction of the housing units is expected to generate local job opportunities, particularly in the construction sector, while the long-term occupation of the units will encourage increased local spending, benefiting businesses and services throughout the Loxton Waikerie area.”

Comments attributable to Trevor Norton, Mayor:

“We are thrilled to support the development of this key worker housing project, and we’re excited to see this project come to fruition. Affordable housing for essential workers will play a vital role in attracting and retaining the talent we need to sustain our community and services. This project is an important step forward in addressing local housing challenges and ensuring the continued prosperity of our district.”
