The Loxton Institute Reopens as a Vital Community Facility

Published 19th November 2024
Council is excited to announce the official opening of the Loxton Institute, a landmark project partially funded by the Australian Government through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Stage 1 of the project, which commenced in June 2023, involved the design, construction, and commissioning of a new library, visitor information, and cultural centre at the historic site of the former Loxton Council Chamber at 29 East Terrace. We are pleased to share that this phase has now been completed, with the facility commencing operations on Monday, 18 November 2024. This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of Michael Kregar Building, the head contractor for the project, along with the many local subcontractors and suppliers who contributed to the project.

The Loxton Institute's redevelopment has successfully blended modern amenities with heritage preservation. The front façade, first two rooms, and hallway of the original building have been carefully restored in consultation with Heritage SA to ensure compliance with heritage legislation. These preserved sections now serve as a vibrant display of the region’s rich history and a dedicated space for historical administration services.

The local history section sits adjacent to the building’s main entrance, opening to a visitor information area that offers Loxton-branded merchandise and a variety of products, treats, and artworks created by local creatives. The library, with its expansive book collection and flexible work zones, provides a welcoming and modern space for the community. Additionally, the facility includes two bookable meeting rooms, a children’s area, and modern restroom facilities. The rear of the building has also been opened up with a striking glass breezeway, leading to an outdoor deck designed for relaxation and enjoyment.

Stage 2 of the project, which will see the construction of new public amenities block in the East Terrace median strip where the previous library and visitor information centre is located, is expected to begin in the new year.
