Works to Reopen William Street Staircase Soon to Commence
The staircase, which sustained significant structural damage during the 2022/2023 Murray River floods, has remained closed to the public for safety reasons. This has left an important river access point unavailable for local residents and visitors.
Following the flooding, the Council promptly initiated an assessment and investigation into the damage, seeking quotes for remediation. The process experienced significant delays due to the complexities involved in claiming the repairs through insurance.
The Council previously expressed its frustration with these extended timelines, and also acknowledged that various factors, such as the nature of the repair work and contractor availability, were beyond its immediate control.
Council has now engaged Seacon Australia, specialising in maritime construction, to carry out the necessary repairs, which will include the installation of screw piles to landing supports, missing handrails, and the reinstatement of the retaining wall. Work is set to commence in June 2025 with the goal of reopening the staircase to the public by October 2025.
Comments attributable to Mayor Trevor Norton:
“We understand the community’s frustration with the prolonged closure of the staircase, and we’ve been committed to finding a solution. I’m pleased to announce that we now have a clear path forward for the community to regain access.”
